About Hefei City
Hefei, the capital of Anhui Province, located in the central region of China between Yangtze and Huaihe Rivers and near Chaohu Lake. It possesses a strategically important location easily accessible from all directions of the country, and it connects the vast area of Central China.
Hefei, well known both at home and abroad as “a historic site famous from the Three Kingdoms Period and the hometown of Lord Bao”, is a city with a history of more than 2000 years. Since the later Eastern Han Dynasty, it had been made governance site several times of the local government as a county or prefecture, constantly an important administration center and a crucial military stronghold in the region between Huaihe River and Yangtze River.
The name of “Hefei” first appeared in the Collected Biographies of Merchants under the Historical Records written by Sima Qian, a famous writer and historiographer in Chinese history. It goes like: Hefei, impacted economically from both north and south, was a collection and distribution center for furs, leather, aquatic products and timber. Between Qin and Han Dynasties, it was chartered as Hefei County, coming under the jurisdiction of Jiujiang Prefecture. Liu Xiu, an emperor of the Eastern Han Dynasty, upgraded Hefei to be a Kingdom. By the Three Kingdoms Period, Hefei was the seat of the government of Yangzhou Prefecture. Then between Ming and Qing Dynasties, it became the seat of the government of Luzhou Prefecture. Hence Hefei came to be also known as Luzhou.
Hefei city is one of the important railway hubs of China. Transportation by waterway can enter into the Yangtse River through Nanfei River; Highway and airway communications are very convenient. Since the opening-up and reform, Hefei has entered a fast track for its economic and social development. Its GDP has grown at a two-digit rate for more 20 years, resulting in a constant increase in its economic comprehensive strength.


Anhui University, the only key comprehensive provincial institution, is located in Hefei, the beautiful capital city of Anhui Province. Founded in 1928 in Anqing and moved to Hefei in 1958, Anhui University is now a developing higher institution supported by the government under the State 211 Project. Anhui University covers an area of about 207 hectares. Its library has a collection of more than 1.75 million books and over 7,000 Chinese and foreign periodicals, and it is equipped with a campus computer network. With beautiful scenery, the environment of the campus is very fine. Anhui University consists of 23 schools, 44 departments, 74 undergraduate specialties, 148master degree programs, 50Ph.D. programs, and 5 Postdoctoral Research Stations.
The University has a teaching staff of 1500, among whom more than 800 are professors or associate professors. The student population totals more than 31,000, among whom 21000 are undergraduate students and 6000 are postgraduate students.
The university attaches great importance to the international exchange and cooperation. Now, it has entered into agreements with 92 overseas institutions. It began to accept foreign students in 1980. It is authorized by the Ministry of Education to enroll international students who enjoy Chinese government’s scholarships. It was designated by Overseas Chinese Affairs Office under the State council the Teaching Base for Chinese Language and Culture in 2000.At present, students from more than 40 countries are studying in Anhui University.
Also FMU attached great importance to academic research. It hosts 1 post-doctor clinical research center, 65 research institutions, 2 provincial "Project 211" key disciplines, 13 provincial key disciplines, 8 disciplines of prior development designated by Fujian Provincial Department of Science and Technology, 6 key disciplines at school level, 6 provincial key medical specialties, 5 provincial leading specialties with medical characteristics and 3 key laboratories designated by Fujian Province, which have undertaken great scientific tasks, and made remarkable achievements. Since 2001, more than 100 scientific research programs have been rewarded, over 5,500 papers published, with 86 of them recorded in SCI, and 45 academic works issued as well. The University Library, as the main medical library of Fujian province, holds an area of 25,233 square meters and a collection of 1, 53 million volumes.
The University has developed collaborative relationships for scientific research and talents training with some universities and medical research institutes from the United States, Japan, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Australia, and Canada and so on. In the past 5 years, more than 160 groups, as well as 700 people from the United States, Japan, etc. have visited the University, given lectures and carried out other academic activities. Over 20 overseas alumni have taken posts in colleges, departments or research institutes of FMU, with 110 experts and alumni engaged as its guest professors.
